Nearly a third of persons with diabetes suffer from clinically relevant depressive disorders.
(Anderson and Freedland, 2001).
Persons with depressive disorders are twice as likely as the rest of the population to also suffer from diabetes.
(Bjorntorp, 2001).People with diabetes often experience negative emotions, sadness or anxiety about their illness and the impact it has on their lives. In a sense, this is absolutely normal. The demands and concerns that accompany diabetes makes these kinds of emotions understandable.
The Dialogue on Diabetes and Depression is dedicated to increasing understanding of the ways that emotions, anxiety, sadness and particularly depression enter into the lives of those with diabetes. It is also interested in promoting ways to help.
Bringing together leaders in research, care for those with diabetes, and organizations concerned with diabetes and mental health, the Dialogue helps raise awareness of these issues, encourages research to understand the interplay of diabetes and depression, and promotes improvements in health care to help individuals both manage their diabetes and live full and satisfying lives.
